Tease--a short story

Everyone else was outside enjoying the much anticipated spring weather in New Jersey. It has been a tiring winter of snow storms, unpaved roads, and burst of whistling winf that felt like daggers of ice piercing through your body. It's no wonder why they'd all prefer to be outdoors creating tournaments of Beer Pong on the back patio underneath the cloudless blue sky.

For Nola and Dale, however, sitting comfortably close to each other on a couch in an empty living room was compelling enough to stay indoors. It's been five months now since they've been playing this game. Sooner or later, eruption--along with confusion, clarity, and disappointment--was bound to happen.

After four and a half beers, he was feeling it. The alcohol was slowly and sweetly invading his system. Nola, on the other hand, was completely sober, as she's always been.

Normally he'd be too insecure to wrap his arm around her, but die to his current state of intoxication, a newfound burst of confidence enabled him to do it discreetly and smoothly. Contemplating on kissing her, he wondered what she was thinking, and if, by magic, she could be feeling it too.

After laughing at whatever smart remark Dale just made, Nola did notice the change of mood in the atmosphere. Lights seemed to dim, words no longer were spoken, eyes focused, and bodies were tensing.

Choking out a whisper, he boldly breaks the silence, "I'm going to kiss you now."

She makes no reaction.

Slowly, he leans in and softly, he touches his lips with hers. After passing his first test, he moved on the next.

"Now that she hasn't stopped me, will she kiss back?" he thought.

***
She can smell his familiar scent of cologne and soap. It's fresh and clean and sexy. Embarrassed, her cheeks grow a tint of pink when she can hear her own heart beating. Unknowingly, her body has drawn closer and closer to him. Despite her attempts to resist, she was the magnet and he was the refrigerator. She won't kiss back, but she won't stop him either. His touch sent electric waves through her body--enticing and alarming her both at the same time. He kissed with growing passion and she felt ferself losing control. With her eyes closed, she could feel her other senses come alive.

Gently stroking her back, he can feel her take deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling with an unsteady rhythm.

"She likes this, that's good" he encouraged himself.

Moving on to her neck, he can taste the vanilla on her skin. With a palm pressing firmly against his chest, she mutters, "You're drunk... I'd be taking advantage," she says facetiously.

Ignoring her, continues to kiss her and the corners of her neck. "She likes this," he reminded himself once again. "She wants this, it feels right. Finally."

As he unzipped her hoody, his hopeful thoughts were interrupted.

"Dale, we should stop."
***

The words didn't register in his mind right away.

"Wait, what?" He had to make sure he heard correctly.

"We're friends Dale. We can't do this."

As he peels himself off of her, he couldn't help but wonder: Who was the bigger tease?
